Reading Comprehension Checks for April

There are 3 Accountability Stars at the top of the page. Students can color a star each time they read a story. This ensures that they are reading the story at least 3 times to encourage fluency.

After completing the Comprehension Check, students can color a star on the Reading Comprehension and Fluency Tracker. Each month will have 20 different Comprehension Checks with 5 Comprehension Questions. These simple comprehension questions provide students with an opportunity to look back at the text and using complete sentences. This option is more effective than the “fill in the bubble” method. In addition, students will use the color code to look back in the text (text evidence) and highlight the answers.

This packet includes comprehension checks with and without the crayons.

I get a lot of emails from parents who are ready to teach their child how to read. They tell me that their children know their letters and their sounds, therefore they are Ready to READ! “Where do we start and what do we do next?” they ask.

I LOVE their enthusiasm! I LOVE their willingness to dive right in.

However… diving into a full blown reading curriculum at that early stage is not the next step. To build a strong foundation for reading success, children need to master Phonological/Phonemic Awareness.

What is Phonological/Phonemic Awareness?

Phonological and Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds (phonemes).  This skill provides a strong foundation for early reading success. As students become more proficient in hearing, identifying and manipulating sounds, they can successfully move onto segmenting and blending words. A systematic and cohesive approach to teaching phonological awareness can build confident readers who are less likely to struggle with decoding and spelling skills. Students with strong a phonemic awareness are much more likely to be successful readers.

Who Can Benefit from Phonological/Phonemic Awareness?
Reading instruction is important for all students. A strong foundation in phonological/phonemic awareness can benefit:
*Beginning Readers
*Struggling Readers
*Students with autism or other developmental disabilities
*Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st Grade Students

Authentic Phonemic Awareness is done without printed words. It is all about the sounds that letters make. It gives students the ability to work with sounds, manipulate sounds and master these sounds in a variety of ways. When students are able to do these skills successfully, they are able to jump into phonics with a lot less struggle.  Phonics (not Phonemic Awareness) works with connecting the sounds to printed letters and words.  When you target phonemic awareness first, it allows a child to focus on one thing…sounds.  However, when you try to teach both phonemic awareness (sounds) and phonics (linking sounds to letters and words), it can be overwhelming and frustrating for children learning to read.

When a child struggles with reading, the gaps are often connected to a lack of phonemic awareness skills. Going back and reinforcing these skills can help fill in the gaps and build stronger readers.

Within my Phonemic Awareness Bundle, I have provided an opportunity to practice many skills necessary to give children a strong foundation with sounds. Let’s take a look at this bundle, see how it works and why it is an important component to reading success.

The pictures and activities that I am about to show you below are all stored in my Phonemic Awareness Kit. This is EASY to set up and just requires a box and some file folders. This method keeps me organized and all of my materials are in one place. When my teaching materials are organized, I am more equipped to meet the needs of those that I am teaching.

In this post, I will show you 9 different activities to help build phonemic awareness.

What are the Components to Phonemic Awareness?

I like to start with and include the following packets when teaching phonemic awareness:

Let’s start with Beginning Sounds. This is a great place to start, but it is typically the only component of phonemic awareness that many people implement.

Once you print out the letters and picture cards, it is a great idea to set them up and get them organized. I print, laminate and cut out all of the pieces.

Although you typically don’t want to use printed letters or words when teaching phonemic awareness, I found it helpful with the pocket chart cards. It lays a great foundation for beginning sounds.

Each set of pocket chart cards has a picture of the beginning sound for every letter of the alphabet.

#6 Segmenting and Blending Cards (Push and Blend)


This is a FUN packet to work with as students use hands-on manipulatives to hear each sound and blend the sounds together. This task really helps set students up for success when it comes to phonics and sounding out words.I like to use these counters when segmenting and blending sounds in a word.
This is a picture of a rat. Even the word mouse would work.
The word rat has three sounds /r/ /a/ /t/….rat.
Students put a counter up for each sound they hear. This helps them isolate each sound in the word. If there are 3 circles, that means they must hear and isolate those 3 sounds. This really helps students to SLOW DOWN and isolate every sound.
Once they finish pushing up the counters for each sound, they sweep their finger across the arrow to blend the word.The same thing can be done with play dough. Having a child use some sort of manipulative helps the learning become more kinesthetic and hands-on. The physical aspect helps the brain connect what they are learning.
Begin by having students make a play dough ball for each circle on the mat. As they segment the phonemes (sound out each sound), they smash a ball.
It’s FUN, they like doing it, and they are really forced to hear each sound!
SUPER EFFECTIVE!!
Once again, they would use the arrow to sweep and blend the sounds to make the word.
One of my favorite ways to segment words and to blend them is with a slinky.
Not only are these activities great for developing phonemic awareness skills, but it also helps students  build spelling skills.
This packet contains 240 words for students to segment and blend! This provides them with a LOT of opportunities to practice and master that necessary skill of segmenting and blending phonemes (sounds) to make a word.
This packet works with words that have 2, 3, 4, and 5 phonemes (sounds).#7 Counting Syllables Sorting and Clip Cards
The Counting Syllables Packet allows students to work with and master syllables in words. When a student can successfully chuck words into syllables, it also helps with decoding and spelling. When they begin to learn more phonics rules, they are able to implement those rules into the chunks they hear.  When a child knows how to decode syllables, they become more fluent readers who can better comprehend the text they are reading.The counting syllable cards can be used in two ways:
Option #1
Sort into containers by the number of syllables.

NOTE: If students are struggling to hear the number of syllables in a word, have them place their hand under their chin. The mouth will open and the jaw will drop with each syllable. Once the student feels the jaw tap their hand, they know that is one syllable sound.

I use four containers to sort the syllable cards.

Option #2
Use clothespins to clip the correct number of syllables for each picture.

 

Where do I go after this?
Once a child has mastered phonological and phonemic awareness skills, they are ready to successfully transition into phonics!

As teachers and parents, we understand the importance of mastering basic math facts.  Basic math facts provide a foundation for math success.  It is the precursor for more complex and challenging math procedures. Although we want kids to become fluent with their math facts, this is not a goal that is simple to achieve.

#1 Students need a variety of opportunities to learn and master math facts. Since students learn in different ways, we need to provide ample opportunity for mastery… in a variety of ways.

When it comes to working with math facts, I am all about making it fun and as hands-on as possible.  I have created 6 packets in our Addition and Subtraction Bundle to make practice FUN! I have also created our Addition and Subtraction Math Fact Booklets to give students endless opportunities to practice with 216 wipe on and wipe off booklets!

For students who need the extra support, it is my hope and goal that teachers and/or parents will use these resources with manipulatives. Below I will show you a few manipulatives that we like to use for adding and subtracting. For students who don’t need the extra support, manipulatives may not be as necessary.  The most important thing is that you, as the teacher,  integrate manipulatives, visuals, tables, hundred charts and discussion as needed.

Over time and through multiple avenues of practice, students will begin to master basic addition and subtraction facts automatically.  This is ultimate goal and this is what we hope to achieve for our students.

We used 10 counting bears and subtracted 4. This is a simple way to incorporate hands-on manipulatives with these sheets. Anythings goes….and we have even used Shopkins

We do a great job reading all of our words, but can we spell them? Spelling words is a lot more challenging than reading words.  When we have difficulty spelling words, we pull out the slinky. The slinky helps us stretch out each sound and hear the sounds. This helps students isolate each individual phoneme. Next, the work to spell the word…and usually it is a LOT easier!

I get a lot questions about my curriculum choices, so I thought I would share them here in a blogpost. Many people wonder if I use only my own curriculum. The answer is no. I wish I had time to create everything that my girls use, but that is impossible. Besides, I don’t feel comfortable creating every academic resource we use. I rely on the experts to bring quality curriculum to our homeschool educational environment.

I have used different Bible curriculum in the past and I have been pretty happy with everything that I have chosen. I decided this year to do a switch and try Ken Ham’s Answers for Kids Bible Curriculum because it looks great. I also supplemented it with the Answer Books shown below. These are WONDERFUL! Tons of answers to questions kids may have about the Bible.

For history, we will be using Abeka Grade 4 History Kit.  There is also a Teacher’s Edition for this set.

In addition to our Abeka history above, we will be studying about Manzanar and visiting the National Historic Site in California. Last year my husband (who taught college history) purchased this Educator Resources as part of Audrey’s 4th Grade curriculum.

We started off by filling in our multiplication chart.  I noticed that my daughter was having some difficulty with the 12 so we pulled out some base ten manipulatives.  We went through the multiplication facts so she could visually see the facts.  It worked like a charm and math became more visual.

We have always loved using our Sight Word Money and I recently added a few packets with some updates!  I printed our Sight Word Money on green colored card stock.  I started off by printing the pre-primer, primer and 1st Grade set for my 1st Grade.  We read through all of the words so quickly and she was eager to master the ones she didn’t know.  Now I am happy to say that we are getting ready to learn the 2nd and 3rd grade words!

WHAT IS SUBITIZING?

Subitizing is not a term that we use often, but it is an important mathematical concept that can greatly benefit student achievement. Subitizing is the ability to “instantly see” how many. This method of teaching is achieved when students can spontaneously recognized and discriminate small numbers of objects. Students who can successfully subitize are able to “just know” a group of numbers and recognize the pattern. We move students on from one by one counting to subitizing.

Let’s take a look at the following examples:

HOW DO YOU TEACH SUBITIZING?

We teach subitizing by exposing students to number patterns that they can immediately recognize. We train their brains to see organized groups of numbers. When students can successfully subitize, they are able to mentally compose (bring together) and decompose (break apart) numbers. They are able to quickly add numbers together without counting one by one.

For example, if a student knows that a full ten frame equal ten, and half of a ten frame equals 5, they are able to visually and/or mentally compose the numbers to make 15.

In effort to make subitizing hands-on, fun and highly effective, I created an engaging NO PREP Subitizing packet!

This subitizing packet allows students to work with consistent patterns of dots, dice, ten frames, counting sticks and other familiar math patterns.                                                Best of all, students get to color and play their way to successful subitizing!

BINGO: Level 1…

Students roll a die. They place a game piece on a matching number. For example, if they roll a three, they look for an item that has three. This pattern can occur in a die, ten frame, tally marks, fingers or any other organized pattern.  This fun game helps students train their brain to immediately see and know the number. This simple activity helps students move on from one by one counting. Math becomes more effortless, quicker and FUN! This would be considered Level 1, where the numbers are less than 10.

BINGO: Level 2…

Once you move onto Level 2, the numbers increase and it becomes much more challenging. As you can see…we LOVE this game! I am currently using this as a review for my 2nd grader, who sometimes struggles to “see” the numbers immediately. These fun subitizing games will help us MASTER this concept!

Since the numbers are higher, we move on from dice to spinners. Begin by spinning the spinner with a paperclip and pencil. Cover the number that matches your spin.

We used what we had around the house…bug counters. For two players, each person gets a color for their game pieces. The first person with 5 in a row wins the game!

We worked hard on training our brain to “see” the numbers automatically! The conversation was AMAZING! When she spun a 17 for example, she would search the gameboard for an organized set of numbers that made up 17.  She finally found one with a full ten frame plus 7 more! She can calculate pretty well, but this simple review is helping her brain automatically see the numbers!

Color Your Way to Successful Subitizing!

Kids LOVE to color, so why not teach subitizing by coloring? The patterns on the coloring pages are organized in a way that kids can immediately recognize sets of numbers. That being said, if students start off by counting the numbers, that’s fine too. However, we want to move them on from one by one counting to be able to visually “chunk” those numbers and immediately KNOW the amount.

Teaching grammar and language art skills can be a challenge for anyone. How do you hit all of the skills…effectively? How do you know your students are grasping the concepts you are teaching? Often times, only the major grammar and language arts skills are covered, while many are overlooked or only slightly touched upon.

TEACHING GRAMMAR AND LANGUAGE ARTS

There are not enough genuine opportunities for students to learn, practice and revisit grammar and language arts skills. Many of these skills can be boring and/or overwhelming for kids to learn, especially when they are not given a variety of ways to learn these skills. This is why I created our 2nd Grade Grammar and Language Arts Bundle! I wanted to take the BORING OUT of important skills and incorporate activities that are fun, hands-on and highly effective. These language arts and grammar packets not only help students learn about these skills, they help students MASTER these skills! The NO PREP packets give students many opportunities to practice a specific language arts and grammar skill on different levels.

Let’s take a look at a few of these packets up close, starting with our Nouns Packet!

Each Packet has a Cover Page to introduce the topic…

Each packet will incorporate an interactive flip book. I like to print this page on colored paper. Students begin by cutting out their flip book and pasting the left side to a blank composition notebook. Once the flip book is inside the notebook, students flip the flaps and give examples for the types of nouns on the outside. This is a wonderful way for students to revisit, review and easily reference the skill they learned! Remember, we are going for mastery!                     This flip book includes common nouns, proper nouns, plural nouns and irregular nouns.

Under the proper noun flip, she wrote Audrey, Disneyland, Moppy (our dog), Daisy (our other dog) and Sophia. This flap of the flip book reminds students that the nouns that name a person, place or thing, and get a capital letter are called proper nouns. The BEST part about these interactive flip books is that you can continually refer back to them as a review.

Let’s take a look at some of the noun pages in action…

In this example, we are reading a short passage, identifying the different types of nouns and highlighting each type of noun. We used red pencil for a person, orange for a place, yellow for a thing and green for animals. This simple activity helps students deliberately identify and record different types of nouns.

Once the passage is highlighted, students record their answers in the columns below.

In this activity, students read the tiles of the books and categorize them by people, places, animals and things. In this example, we grabbed some colorful stickers and used them to color code the books! Such a simple, yet fun and effective way to practice nouns!

Let’s make it fun! Here we did a scavenger hunt around the house for nouns. I let her wander around the house and do this activity completely on her own. I wanted to see what she knew and to see if there was anything we needed to revisit. She did a GREAT job and she was pretty proud of herself!

How do you teach spelling? Traditionally, spelling is taught by giving kids a list on Monday and a test on Friday. The problem with this approach can be that students learn to memorize words in isolation.  I am not opposed to spelling tests, but I do think that young students need a hands-on approach to spelling.

The Build a Word Packets allow students to see patterns in words by implementing strategic phonics into their spelling. Within the bundle, there are 6 targeted phonics patterns that build strong spellers by utilizing a hands-on approach.

1. CVC Words – Consonant-Vowel-Consonant words build the foundation for the rest of the implemented phonics patterns. This packet allows students to build 84 words!

2. Blends – (also known as consonant clusters ) blends are two or three consonants in words that make a distinct sound. The packet works with L-Blend, S-Blend and R-Blend words with 114 cards.

3. Digraphs – a combination of two letters that represent one sound. There are 6 main digraphs in this packet: sh, th, ch, ck, ph, and wh.

4. R-Controlled Vowels – When the letter “r” follows a vowel it effects the sound the vowel makes. This packet includes 42 cards that will work with the ar, er, ir, or and ur sounds.

5. Long Vowels – Long vowels say their own name. They can work together with a “silent e,” or they can work together with another vowel. In this packet of 171 cards, the following vowel patterns will be covered: Long A: a_e, ai, ay  Long E: ea, ee, ey, y  Long I: i_e, ie, igh, y  Long O:  o_e, ow, oa, oe  Long U: u_e, ue, ew, ui

6. Diphthongs:  When a vowel has a noticeable change within the same syllable, it is considered a diphthong. Basically, a diphthong is a type of vowel sound that is made up of a combination of two individual vowel sounds within the same syllable.  The diphthongs included in the 91-card packet are as follows: au, aw, ew, oo, oi, oy, ow, and ou.

Beginning spellers and readers start by sounding out CVC (consonant- vowel -consonant) words. If students know their letter sounds, they can transition to sounding out simple CVC words.  CVC words allow students to work on blending consonants and short vowels.

Next in the phonics progression, student move onto Blends and Digraphs. You can continue with the R-Controlled Vowels and Long Vowels.  Finally, you can introduce Diphthongs.  Soon, I will be releasing a Trigraphs Packet to the bundle too!

What are Bossy R Words?

R-Controlled Vowels are often referred to as the “Bossy R”  because the r bosses the vowel to change its sound. The vowel and the r usually stay in the same syllable. Since my youngest needs a little extra practice with these Bossy R words, I decided to create some NO PREP packets to help master these words in a FUN way!  These packets have a wide variety of activities to allow you to differentiate your students’ needs to help them thoroughly master the Bossy R words.

Why teach this phonics skill?

R-Controlled Vowel words can be a challenge for kids to sound out and spell. It is important for students to learn about r-controlled sounds and to be able to recognize them so they can read and spell more complex words.  Often, students who have not mastered r-controlled vowels mispronounce and misspell these words.  For example, if a student were to read the word cord, he or she may read the o as a short o sound and separate it from the r sound, making the word sound like card instead of cord. Also, when spelling the word cord, they may try to add a silent e or a vowel team to make a long o sound, like cored or coard.  Once students have learned and mastered this phonics skill, they should be able to read and write most r-controlled vowel words correctly.

How are the Packets Organized?

The bundle covers the ar, or, er, ir and ur vowel sounds. There are three packets in the bundle: ar words, or words and er, ir and ur words together. When introducing/teaching the er, ir and ur sounds, it is important to note that these last three r-controlled vowels all make the /er/ sound. Since students cannot know which spelling is correct just by the sound itself, they need practice. When student see the words in a variety of ways and in different formats, they begin to “see” and memorize which option goes with each word.

What are Sight Words?

Sight words are the most commonly used words in the English language. A majority of the words that we read in a text are considered sight words. Teaching sight words employs a “whole language approach” which means it is not phonics based. In my opinion, that is okay! I am a strong advocate of teaching both phonics and sight words. Coupled together, we build stronger readers and spellers!

Sight Word Statistics:

The two most common lists of sight words are the Dolch list and Fry list. What is the difference between the Dolch and Fry list?  Dolch Sight Words: The Dolch list was compiled in the early 1900’s and comprise of 50%-70% of all words used in school books, library books, newspapers, etc.  Fry Sight Words: The Fry list was updated and expanded to include 1,000 words within bands of 100, which make up about 90% of all written language.

Which one should you use? Honestly, it probably doesn’t really matter which one you use since they both overlap and cover all major sight words.  The most important thing is that you are teaching sight words strategically, consistently and effectively.

*100 Sight words make up about 50% of those we read and write.
*About 300 Sight Words account for 75% of those we read and write.

Hands-On Spelling for Sight Words!

Let’s talk about spelling today, specifically SIGHT WORDS! Teaching a child how to READ sight words is NOT the same as teaching a child how to SPELL sight words! This post will focus on teaching a child how to  SPELL sight words. Children can read far above their ability to spell, which is why spelling is so important to teach. Strong and confident readers/spellers use both phonics skills AND sight word recognition when reading and spelling. The truth is, learning to spell those “tricky” sight words can be a challenge, which is why I created a hands-on approach to spelling sight words with our Build a Word (Sight Word Edition) packets!

I made packets for both the Dolch version and Fry version.

How Do the Build a Word Packets Work?

The Build a Word Packets (Sight Word Edition) come with TWO VERSIONS, which allows you to differentiate according to the skill levels of your students!

Version #1 Each sight word is broken down into boxes. These boxes allow students to see how many letters are in the sight word and minimally support the type of letter. For example, m’s and w’s will be a bit wider, l’s and i’s will be a bit skinner. This small amount of visual support helps student gain confidence while building words.

Version #2: This is a single box version that requires students to build the sight word independent of the width of the boxes. However, the single box version still provides minimal support by showing the student how many letters are needed to build the sight word. This version would be used with students who need less visual support. This would be considered the next level up.

I wanted these packets to be EASY to use and versatile! You can prepare them two ways. You can print, laminate and cut them into individual cards to be placed on a binder ring.  Or you can print the pages, place them in sleeve protectors, and put them in a binder.  The second option is less time-consuming, and it gives you the option to use a dry erase marker to have students practice writing the words!

Once you’ve prepared them, your spelling work and/or centers are ready to go! If you are working with small groups, you could pull a few pages out of your binder and let the students spell the words.

We work on spelling 2-3 pages a day. You can use the plastic letters, a dry erase marker, scrabble letters, bottle caps with letters written on them or just about any other alphabet piece! This activity is meant to be fun and hands-on, so the more variety the better!

When these packets are used consistently and consecutively, teachers and parents are able to help students become confident spellers of those tricky sight words…one sight word at a time!

Each sight word has three easy to read sentences to help the students fill in and spell the predictable sight words. If a student is unable to figure out what the sight word is, you can tell them the word. The ultimate goal is to be able to SPELL the sight word! And yes…each packet comes with a key.

Reading Sight Words

If your students are still struggling with READING sight words, you will want to take a different approach. One of the most effective ways to teach a child to learn how to read is to help them master their sight words. Confident and fluent readers have a strong sight word recognition. Combined with phonics, sight words play a crucial role in reading success. When students know sight words on demand, they are able to work on decoding other words. Reading becomes less frustrating and more strategic. This allows teachers and parents to target phonics skills and sight words that students students are still struggling with. Here are some of my favorite sight word resources for learning to READ sight words.

This activity allows students to work on a specific sight word in 7 different ways! Identifying sight words with a variety of fonts and published styles, tracing the sight word, color by the code, highlighting the specific sight word, using it in a simple sentence, boxing it up and building the word.

Sight Word Money

Learn and earn with sight word cash! This really makes learning sight words FUN! Each time a student learns to read (or spell) the sight word, they get the sight word buck. They continue to read and collect their sight words. At the end, they can turn in their sight words for a fun treat or prize. I printed mine on colored paper, laminated them for durability and hole punched them so they can go on a ring.  EASY….FUN and very motivating!

Sight Word Watches

WEARABLE Sight Words Watches! These have always been a HUGE hit with my girls!  Kids get to color, cut and wear their sight word watch for the day! Since the sight word watches are printed on paper, they do tear.  You can keep them on longer by adding a piece of clear tape around the entire watch. They are only meant to stay on for a day, so this works like a charm! Some teachers have even gone so far as to laminated each sight watch so students can wear them again and again. Throughout the day, have students say the sight word, spell the sight word and use the sight word in a sentence. Ask…What time is it? The students answer with the sight word on the watch. For example, it is THE time or T-H-E time. FUN…FUN…FUN!

How are the Units Covered?

Each unit will offer two components to help make the math units meaningful and engaging for whole group, small group or individual lessons.  This curriculum gives the teacher flexibility and freedom to rearrange the units to fit the needs of his/her students. Since there are so many practice pages and centers in each unit, the teacher can use many of the pages and centers as a spiral review as the year progresses. Math Centers- Each unit will have a variety of math centers or stations to help students practice and apply skills and strategies taught within the math unit. These math centers are purposeful and will help to make each math concept more concrete. Math centers or stations increase student motivation by:

*Providing meaningful learning opportunities

*Fostering independence

*Allowing for differentiation

*Best of all…they make learning math FUN!

*****NOTE: ALL math centers are also available in black and white.  You can print the centers in black and white on colored paper to save on colored ink while still keeping it fun.

 A Quick Overview of the Math Centers

This comprehensive and full Kindergarten math curriculum ensures that all grade level math standards are being covered in a variety of ways! The units allow for critical thinking, use of manipulatives, fun and engaging practice pages, and interactive centers that are sure to keep your students wanting more math!

Let’s take a look at Unit 1 in Action…

There are 22 Hands-On Centers in this Unit! It is HUGE! I’m excited to show you each center and how it works.

Center Number 1: Bubble Gum Center

You can use any type of manipulate with the bubble gum centers. Playdoh is great for building fine motor skills, but counters or pom poms work just as well. Students flip a number card and place the correct number of objects on the gumball machine.

Center Number 2: Crayon Match Up 

This activity allows students to sort and find the crayons that match each number on the crayon box. The objects on the crayons work with ten frames, counting fingers, dots for subitizing and other common number patterns. Students begin to subitize by seeing “how many” without counting.

Center Number 3: Count on Caterpillar

For this center, simply laminate the caterpillars, grab a dry erase marker and lets kids count on. An important Kindergarten skill is to be able to count on from any given number. Students also practice writing the number on the caterpillar body. Just erase and practice!

Center Number 4:Butterfly Number Match

This center works on counting. Students count the butterflies and match a ten frame and a number to each set.

I love to mix things up to get the full use out of each center as much as possible. I turned this into another center by adding some mini cubes and snap cubes! Flexibility and creativity can lend itself to more hands-on fun!

Center Number 5: Numbers Before and After

Spin the spinner, put the number that you spin in the center, and decide which numbers come before and after.

Center Number 6: Three in a Row

For this game, students will roll a die and write the two numbers that come next or the numbers that come before and after. There are two versions of the game so that students have opportunities to work with either number sequences or numbers before and after.

Center Number 7: Watermelon Seeds One More One Less

Pull a watermelon card, count the seeds, write the number in the middle. Write the number that comes before and after on the lines, and draw the seeds on the watermelon slices.

Center Number 8: One Less One More Watermelon Seeds

Pull a watermelon card, count the seeds, write the number in the middle. Next, write the number that comes before and after the given number.

Center Number 9: Popcorn Roll and Play One More and One Less

Math has never been more fun! Roll a die and cover a number that is one more than the number on your die! This center has several pages with different dice for rolling one more or one less. Add a little popcorn for your math cover up pieces and you have become “The BEST teacher ever!” This is Math Made Fun!

Center Number 10: Ice Cream Scoop Numbers

This center is so much fun! Kids work on counting different objects and matching them up to the number cone. This center also works on identifying number words for quantities of 1-10.

Center Number 11: Domino Numbers

I LOVE these jumbo dominos! For this center you need to add some clothespins. On the clothespins you can write the number, the number word or the matching number of dots. By implementing these different types of skills, you are meeting multiple grade level standards!

Center Number 12: Bubble Gum Counting and Writing Numbers

Once you laminate these bubble gum machines, simply add a dry erase marker to wipe on and wipe off! The holes on the left can be hole punched and placed on a ring in baggie for storage.

Center Number 13: Number Word Buses

In this center, students work on counting the dots on the ten frame and identifying the correct number word.

Center Number 14: Apple Seeds- What is One More?

In this cute apple seed math game, students work to count the seeds and identify the number that tells one more.

Center Number 15: Watermelon- What is One Less

Count the seeds on the watermelon ten frame and clip the number that is one less.

Center Number 16: Flower Counting- Count and find a Match

Student count the dots on the flower ten frame and then find and clip the number of dots that match.  This teaches one-to-one correspondence with quantity recognition.

Center Number 17: Pencil Puzzles

In this center, students work with puzzles to match the number of objects to the number. Each number has three puzzles. You can break up the set to have only one set of puzzles or have students work in groups to match these self-correcting number puzzles.

Center Number 18: Apple Tree Math Game

Students flip a basket of apples and place the correct number of apples on the tree. I used these apple erasers from amazon, but I have also included apple squares in the unit that can be printed.

Center Number 19: Ten Frame Mats- Flip and Build

Ten Frame Building mats are a great way for kids to visually subitize numbers. Students flip a card, count the items and build the number on the ten frame mat. You can use any type of manipulative you have: playdoh, counters, pom poms, popcorn, snap cubes or anything else that fits in the squares. Switching up the manipulatives can make this math activity more interesting and fun for kids!

Center Number 20: Number Towers Count and Build

There are three different mats to play three different Number Tower games. In the first one, students work on counting dots in ten frame. They snap together the cubes and build a tower for each number.

On this mat, students simply identify each number and snap the correct quantity of cubes to match.

Count the dots and build the tower to match. This is also a great way to work on subitizing.

Center Number 21: Number Wheels Clip and Match

For this center, students count the items and clip a clothespin to match. You can write numbers, number words or dots on the clothespins to switch it up and practice different skills. This center has 7 different Number Wheels!

Center Number 22: Number Word Match it Up!

These centers work on identifying number words and matching a ten frame bus, a number or a group of dots. There are two number mats in this center and three sets of cards. Therefore, you can use these for 6 individual centers.

Expand the center even more by allow students to play against each other in a game called Flip to Win! Each student gets a number board. Put all three sets of cards together. Flip a card and match it to a number name on your board. If you draw a card that already has a match on your board, put the card on the side. The first person to fill their board wins the game!

Color by Dots: This helps with counting and subitizing, which is an important math skill that kids need to master.

The more challenging practice pages can be used as a spiral review throughout the year!

Number Hunts: These pages help students to see numbers in a variety of ways: ten frames, dice, dominos and dots.

Ice Cream Math: Another activity where students can master their subitizing skills.

One More: This activity works on identifying a set that has one more in it.

Roll and Trace a Number- Mastering number words can be a challenge, but this set is a great way to count and connect number words.

Roll and Write a Number- Roll a die and write a matching number.

Roll, Count and Color– Roll a die, find an apple that has the same number and color it.

Organizing the Kindergarten Math Centers

I know that teachers who are organized are more likely to be successful! In my experience, being organized makes us feel more relaxed and able to enjoy the teaching process. It also helps the day go more smoothly. So today I want to show you an easy solution to organizing the Kindergarten Math Units.

I store all of the units inside of sterilite containers. There are 22 math centers in this box. It is a tight squeeze, but they all fit. This is a great option if you are short on space. Costco also sells beautiful containers that are a bit larger.

I like to place each center in a plastic gallon-sized bag.

Each center has a card that explains how to play each game or complete each activity. At the same time, the centers are numbered for easy access and reference for each grade-level standard.

Organizing the NO PREP Practice Pages

I print and put all of the NO PREP Practice Pages into my binder. This allows me to pull the pages that I need to copy and print. When I am finished, I place them back into the binder. You can also use a dry erase maker with many of the pages, making this a great option if you are limited in the number of copies you are allowed to make.

Each unit has a quick reference guide that highlights the kindergarten standards that are covered in the unit.

One of my absolute FAVORITE things about this Kindergarten Math Curriculum is that EVERY grade level standard is covered in the bundle! I also tell you exactly which standard each page covers in the NO PREP Binder!

Each center fulfills a specific grade level standard also. Furthermore, this curriculum allows you to connect the practice pages with the centers that correspond to the standard you are working on! Consequently, you can seamlessly implement this curriculum into ANY current curriculum or use it as a stand-alone curriculum!

Kindergarten Math Unit 2 is here!

I want kids to know that math is FUN! Therefore, I don’t think we need to “trick” them into thinking that learning math can be fun. On the other hand, providing them with hands-on, engaging and FUN resources will make them WANT to learn math! So I am super excited to share with you Unit 2 of the Kindergarten Math Made Fun Curriculum!

Let’s take a look at the Math Centers for Unit 2 in Action…

Center Number 1: A Bowl of Fish

To begin, flip a number card and add the number of fish into the fish bowl.  You can either use the fish that are included in the center, or you can incorporate snack time by using gold fish crackers as manipulatives!  How fun!

Center Number 2: Spin and Cover

Spin and cover a bubble with the matching number.

Center 3: Number Make a Match

To start, flip over a number card.  Then cover the ten frame that matches.

Center 4: Fruit Count and Clip

Count the fruit on the card and clip a clothespin to the number that matches.

Center 5: Base 10 Count and Clip

Count the base ten blocks on the card and clip a clothespin to the number that matches.

Center 6: Cupcake Puzzles

Count the dots on the bottom of the cupcake.  Match the top part of the cupcake with the correct number of dots.

Center 7: Number Puzzles

Match the number word, number and number of objects to make a complete puzzle.

Center 8: Count and Match Puzzles

Count the number of objects on the puzzle and match to the correct number.

Center 9: Basket of Apples

Place each apple in the basket that matches that apple.

Center 10: Ten Frame- Flip and Build

First, flip a card over. Then build that number on your ten frame mat.  Conveniently, you can use any manipulative of your choosing!

Center 11: Domino Count and Clip

To begin, count the number of dots on the domino. Then clip the matching clothespin. You can also use number words on the clothespins.

Center 12: Penny the Piggy- Count and Match

First, put a penny on each coin space.  Then count the coins and match a gold coin to each set.

Center 13: Number Puzzles- Count and Order 11-20

There are a total of 5 number puzzles in this center. So I have made it easy for you to stay organized by placing a different shape next to the number for each puzzle.

Center 14: Number Strips- Count and Clip

To begin, count the number in each group.  Then clip a clothespin if the group matches the number at the top.

Center 15: Mystery Puzzles

This is one of my favorites of Unit 2!  To start, count the objects in each box. Then match a puzzle piece to the number.  Continue until you’ve finished the puzzle!

Center 16: Spin and Cover One More and One Less

Center 17: Peanut Numbers

Count and match the correct peanuts  to the number on the tub.

Center 18: Number Word Books

Count the books and clip the correct number word.

Center 19: Backpacks- What is One More?

Count the back packs and clip the number that is one more.

Center 20: Pencils- What is One Less?

Count the pencils and clip the number that is one less.

Center 21: Math Towers- One Less and One More

First, spin a number.  Write or build the number in the middle.  Write or build one more and one less.

Center 22: How Many?

First cover the circles with a manipulative.  Then count and write the number in the middle.  Write one more and one less.

There are 53 NO PREP practice pages in this unit. 

For each page, there is a grade level standard attached so you know EXACTLY what you are covering! You can feel confident that ALL the standards for Kindergarten are being covered!

How to I Organize the Units?

First, I tell you exactly what you will need for each unit.

You can conveniently store your units in any type of bin. Though, I like the large Sterilite boxes because they are able to hold all of the centers and don’t take up too much space. Although it might be a tight fit, it all fits inside nicely. However, you could go with a larger box if you have more space.

I like to store each center in a gallon sized baggie.

Kindergarten Math Made Fun Unit 9 is here, and it’s all about SHAPES!

This hands-on, engaging and FUN unit will get kids excited about basic shapes! Not only will they become familiar with shapes and the names of shapes, but students will become MASTERS of these shapes as they learn to manipulate and construct them in multiple ways! Therefore, I am happy to share this hands-on math Unit 9 of the Kindergarten Math Made Fun Curriculum with you!

For Unit 9, these are the grade level standards that are covered:

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE MATH CENTERS FOR UNIT 9 IN ACTION…

Center 1: Roll and Cover a Shape

To start, roll a die. Then say the name of the shape, and cover a shape that matches. Students can play with a partner or by themselves.

Center 2: Composing Shapes

Use pattern blocks to make new shapes for each page.

Center 3: Building Shapes

Use different materials to build shapes such as squares, rectangles, hexagons and triangles.

Center 4: Pattern Block Pictures

Choose a picture card. Use pattern blocks to build the picture. Record the number of each shape you used for your picture.

Center 5: Creating a Picture with Shapes

First create pictures with shapes at the bottom of the page. Then glue your shapes to the page and write how many of each shape you used.

Center 6: Creating Puzzle Shapes (Squares)

Build 4 different Square Puzzles with the different colored puzzle pieces.

NOTE: There are 4 different puzzles for each shape. I printed the puzzles on colored paper and laminated them. The RED puzzles are EASY, the ORANGE puzzles are MEDIUM in difficulty, the YELLOW puzzles are CHALLENGING and the GREEN puzzles are EXTRA CHALLENGING.  To start, introduce the easy puzzles first.  Then, once students have started to build better problem-solving skills, they can progress to the more challenging puzzles.  NOTE: For students who may lack spatial awareness, you can print the pages with the dotted lines (the puzzle piece pages) instead of the blank shape. Students can assemble right onto this page and use the dotted lines as a guide. **SEE TRIANGLE  and SQUARE below for example! 

Center 7: Creating Puzzle Shapes (Circle)

Build 4 different Circle Puzzles with the different colored puzzle pieces.

Center 8: Creating Puzzle Shapes (Triangle)

Build 4 different Triangle Puzzles with the different colored puzzle pieces.

Center 9: Creating Puzzle Shapes (Rectangle)

Build 4 different Rectangle Puzzles with the different colored puzzle pieces.

Center 10: Creating Puzzle Shapes (Hexagon)

Build 4 different Hexagon Puzzles with the different colored puzzle pieces.

Center 11: Geoboard

To begin, create shapes on the Geoboards with the given materials. Then record your answers on the recording sheets.  For this activity, you can allow students to use many different items to create the shapes, such as dry erase markers, play dough, pipe cleaners or wax sticks.

Center 12: Count and Clip (Sides and Corners)

Count the sides and corners of the shapes. Clip the correct number to match.

Center 13: Sorting 2D Flat Shapes

Sort the pictures to the correct shape mat: circles, squares, triangles, hexagons and rectangles.

Center 14: Sorting 3D Solid Shapes

Sort the pictures to the correct shape mat: cubes, spheres, cones and cylinders.

Center 15: Hexagon Honey Hive

To start, spin the spinner. Then use pattern blocks to cover the honey hive. Keep spinning and playing until the hive is filled.

Center 16: Tasty Triangle Pizza

First, spin the spinner.  Then use pattern blocks to cover the pizza pieces and fill the board.

Use a brad and a binder clip to make an easy spinner!

Center 17: Positional Words and Shapes

First sort the pictures to match the position of the shape. Then say the position of the shape to the object. For example, the triangle is inside the wagon.

Center 18: Roll, Slide and Stack

Experiment with the 3D shapes and decide if they can roll, slide and stack. Record the answers on your recording sheet.

Center 19: Clip the Matching Shape

First, clip clothespins to the shapes that match. Then record the answers by coloring in the matching shape on your recording sheet.

Center 20: Shape Patterns

Complete the pattern puzzles by matching the shapes that come next in the pattern.

How do I organize the Units?

I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me.  However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.

I store the NO PREP Practice pages in a 1-inch binder. I place each practice page in a sheet protector. This allows you to easily grab and copy the pages that you need or have students use a dry erase marker for a quick wipe and write activity.
