Here are a few printables in action…

Our Color by Word Family pages are always a HUGE hit!

We LOVE these watercolor pencils!  Just dip the tip of the pencil in water and it turns into a non-messy watercolor! LOVE….LOVE….LOVE these!

This little Moffatt Girls is always happy when I pull them out!  I like breaking things up and making them as engaging as possible. Sometimes we paint, sometimes we use the watercolor pencils and sometimes we just use crayons.

It is kind of like an art project for her :)

What I LOVE about these fun coloring pages is that kids hardly realize that they are reading 21 word family word, 4 color words and following directions by coloring by the code!  So much learning for a "coloring page"!

Sound it out and READ pages...

This is a great way for kids to work on sounding out words and writing each sound in the sound boxes.  Next, they get to use that simple CVC word in context by adding it to a simple sentence and READING!

As you can see, we still need to work on some proper letter formation :)  However, the focus of this page was on sounding out short a words and putting them in a simple sentence!  SUCCESS!

Then of course coloring is a very important component...
This next page was very engaging and brought lots of giggles!  You have to match the correct CVC word to the correct picture in order to deliver you letter to Santa.  Great for reading CVC words!

 Writing Prompts!

Here are a few of the hands-on printable in action…
This coin riddles pages was such a GREAT way to work on making exact change!

Here is an example of one of the riddles:
Beth had 5 coins. The amount of the coins is 38 cents. What coins does Beth have?

I found it to be most effective when we worked with real coins.  Of course you could always use play money, especially in a classroom setting.  Some of the printables are great for independent work, and some are great for teaching.  This was a page that we worked through together!  The perfect challenge!

 Measurement: Inches and Centimeter
We pulled out the measuring tape (from the sewing box) and got to work!

It was so fun because we got to measure the snowmen Puddles, Shorty, Buttons and Frosty!

We measured the height...
and we measured the width for a bonus :)

Subtraction with Regrouping
I always like to incorporate a couple of skills on each page.  In this page, we did subtraction with regrouping.  Then, you had to color the lights green or red, depending on if they were odd or even.

Working on Dictionary Skills….

*Find the word in the dictionary (working on ABC order)
*Write the page number
*Write the guide words on that page
*Write the definition
*Use it in a sentence

Making New Words...
This is such a great way for kids to work on making words!  We cut out the letter tiles at the bottom of the page, and used them to make as many words as we could.

This is such a great way for kids to see word patterns, blends and digraphs.

Hard at work with words!

I hope that these NO PREP packets are super helpful to you during the busy month of December and that they make learning FUN, engaging and hands-on!

How to help BEGINNING or STRUGGLING writers succeed!

$

Writing in a skill that requires daily practice.  I have a little Moffatt Girl who is VERY eager to write.  I wanted to make some NO PREP Journal Prompts that would help her feel successful and learn to love the writing process.  I recently posted our NO PREP December Journal Prompts {HERE}.

Our new NO PREP Journal Prompts for Beginning (or struggling) Writers have been a HUGE hit!  I am overjoyed at the response I got the other day when we did our first writing prompt.  I feel like a little writer has been born! I now have a little girl who is BEYOND EXCITED to write every day!

These journal prompts are designed to help beginning and/or struggling writers build confidence, practice articulating thoughts, work on fine motor skills and proper letter formation.

Here is how they work…
Each journal prompt has "I Can" statements with text and visuals to help remind students to:
*use capital letters
*use finder spacing
*sound out words
*use periods
*draw a picture to support the text

There is also a place for students to illustrate their work or label pictures.
Each journal prompts has 2 different versions for differentiation:
-one with a starter phrase
-one without the starter phrase for more advanced writers

At the bottom of each journal prompt is an illustrated word bank! The word bank helps support and generate ideas for beginning and/or struggling writers.  It is important to remind students that they are not limited to the ideas/words in the word bank.

Each month will also include a fun cover to help create ownership and excitement about the journal prompts for the month.  Something that I like to do is to create a spiral bound notebook with all the journal prompts ready to go.  I usually get that done at a local office supply store.

I also included a basic SIGHT WORD list to help spell some of the most common words that kids use.

Here is a sample of one of the journal prompts included in this months set:
I am SO, SO excited about our NEW Journal Prompts because this little Moffatt Girl LOVED them!  After we finished our first prompt she said, "I love school, Mommy!"
Well…if that just doesn't MELT.MY. HEART!

We started by coloring the cover page.   Kids love to color and this was a perfect way to get them excited about the journal prompts!

Since Sophia is in Kindergarten, we use the set that has the starter sentences.  Next year for 1st grade, I will use the version without the sentence starters.  First we talked about the prompt, then she traced the starter phrase.  Actually, she wanted to draw a picture first, and then she started the prompt.

She used finger spaces…

She used capital letters and periods…

She sounded out words…

This process took about 20 minutes, so we took a small break until the next day.
She was eager to finish her prompt...

This little honey worked HARD!  She was so excited about her writing!  To help her with the process, we would stop and reread what she wrote every few words.  She was so excited to see just how much she had written when she was done! She was proud that SHE could read it ALL by HERSELF!

We used the "I Can" Statement on the right of each page to help remind her of what good writing looks like! We read the statement and she said, "I did that!  I used a capital right here! (pointing to her capitals)  I sounded out box and I used a period two times!"
SUCCESS…SUCCESS…SUCCESS!
Honestly, I didn't realize how powerful those "I Can..." statements would be!

Of course she wanted her picture to represent her writing, so she colored carefully and with great detail!
She created ownership of her writing!  This was something that she was VERY proud of!

 More details!
 Yep!
I think she is pretty proud of herself!
I am proud of her, too!

Her prompt says:
When I wrap a gift, I put it in a box.
Then I put a bow on the box.

Here is one more finished piece!
She even sounded out Christmas….all by herself!!
This is HUGE and we are on our way to some great writing!

Here is a few pages of the Kindergarten packet "in action"…

We used a bingo dabber to dot the numbers 1-75.
This was the PERFECT challenge for her!
 And super FUN!

I had her say each number before she dabbed it.
It was a great way to make sure she could read and recognize numbers up to 75.

"This is FUN!"
This page took her a bit of time to complete...

but boy was she proud of herself at the end of the maze!

Following Directions with Positional Words…
She had to read (or listen to) the directions and color the picture accordingly.

Label and Write!
These pages were a HUGE hit and really took some time to complete...

First, she began by labeling the picture using the word bank.  She was able to read dog, boy, sled and hat.  When we came to the word scarf we worked on sounding it out.

She took the labeling VERY serious!  I really like the sound boxes because it ensures that you are putting the correct letters into each box!

We even erased things when they were incorrect ;)

Then we wrote a sentence!
Here sentence was:
The boy is pulling the dog.
As you can see, we get a little fancy with our y's!

Color by Ten Frame!
Count the ten frames and use the color code to color the skates...

We actually started with the one that had 20 in it and worked backwards.  I explained that when 2 ten frames were fill, that was the same as 10+10.  We know that 10+10 = 20
The visual aspect of 2 ten frames that were filled made it easy for her to see 20.

Then we worked on finding (counting) 19.  We know that 19 is one less than 20.
EASY!

Non-Standard Measurement with a Snowman Ruler!
Begin by cutting out the snowman ruler...

 Measure the pencil...

 Measure your hand...

 Measure a glue stick...

Measure your shoe!  TOO MUCH FUN!!

She LOVED being able to measure the items, count the snowmen and record her answer!

 Measure the crayon!
Find the Word Family!
Wildly Successful!
Find the hidden words and record them in the correct columns.
I LOVE these Watercolor Pencils!
Just dip and color and it looks like watercolors! NO MESS!!!

Haiku Poems!
Oh…these were way too fun!  I think we will be doing these all January!

Audrey's Poem:
Penguins
Penguins like to swim
Sliding down the snowy hill
Come and slide with me!

I pulled out our clock to help work on elapsed time...

This was a GREAT way to practice time in 15, 20 and 30 minute increments...

These little fish need to eat at specific times.  She had to fill in the times for each fish and show the elapsed time according to the given increments...

MASTERY!

Phew!  All of the penguins are fed on time! :)

Roll and Color a Shape...
This was a fun and interactive way to work on recognizing different shapes!

She had to roll and color a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, or octagon!
This simple worksheet made this activity SO much fun for her!

Measurement in Inches…
We used the ruler to read the directions and measure different parts of the penguin!
She LOVED this!

I hope these packets make January learning FUN, hands-on, engaging and highly effective!

Clear the Paper Clutter with a SIMPLE filing system!

Paper clutter drives me crazy!  This simple system has worked so well for me that I wanted to share it with you once again.  It is easy to let paperwork take over, this filing system offers a simple and sanity saving solution.

One of the things that can overwhelm me and cause me lots of stress, is piles of paperwork!  Papers seems to pile up so quickly, and get out of control in no time at all! As a former teacher and now a homeschooling mom,  I knew that organizing our paperwork was top priority.  I couldn't let piles of papers overtake our classroom and clutter our life.  I feel yucky when there is a ton of paperwork just sitting there, begging me to put it away! I walk by the paperwork and we pretend not to see each other.  It is a mutual agreement...until I break down and deal with it.

Then there's the burning question...What do I do with all of their schoolwork?   Do I keep every single thing or do I toss some of it into the "round" file?   Last year, I implemented a very simple system that saved my sanity and worked for me.  In fact, it worked so well that I decided to do it again!

How to Teach CVC Word Families!

$

Hearing a child learn to read for the first times is one of the greatest joys for parents, teachers and kids! There is nothing like it!  After children learn their letter sounds, the next step is CVC word.  I wanted to share some teaching methods that have worked for me in my teaching career and with my own children.

First of all, beginning/struggling readers need activities that are  FUN,hands-on and engaging.  Kids learn better when they are having FUN! When learning becomes a GAME, kids enjoy the process. No more tears, no more crying, no more boring worksheets! I have created our CVC Fluency Bundle to help beginning/struggling readers succeed with tons of hands-on and fun resources!
In addition to fun, hands-on and engaging resources, kids need repetition.  However, repeated practice doesn't need to be boring!  You don't need to practice the same skill in the same way again and again. Kids need VARIETY.  This CVC Fluency Bundle includes 12 packets to help teach common word families in a variety of ways!
The packets are progressive in skill. The first packet in the series begins with isolating sounds (beginning, medial and final sounds) in simple CVC word family words.

Definition of CVC Words:
Three letter words that have a consonant at the beginning, a consonant at the end and a short vowel in the middle.
Examples of CVC words:
cat, dog, bat, nut, him, ran, big, red, map

Examples of three letter words that are NOT CVC words:
the, she, out, you

Each of the following packets are sold individually,
or you can grab the BUNDLE and save 20%!

Teaching Digraphs

Are you ready to conquer DIGRAPHS?

Once a child masters CVC Words it is time to move on to more complex word structures.
Digraphs are a great place to start.

What is a digraph?
A digraph is a single sound (phoneme) that can be represented with two letters.
A consonant digraph joins two consonants together to make one sound.

We are ready for digraphs! I decided to create some fun, hands-on, engaging and a cohesive sets of printables that would help teach the sh, th, ch, wh, ph and ck digraphs. These packets are found in our Digraph Bundle {HERE}.

Learning is at its BEST when it becomes a game!
Chunking words can help students separate the sounds. In this activity, students will trace the word, separate and write the sounds, and then write the word. This will helps students learn out to sound out and spell words, focusing on words with beginning and ending digraphs.

Summer Review NO PREP Packets (UPDATED)

Summer is almost here! I can smell the beach air and feel the sand in my feet.  I know that the little Moffatt Girls are also ready for a summer break!  We have a lot of things on our "Bucket List" this summer, but one thing that is NOT on the list is the Summer Slide!

Here are some statistics about the Summer Slide:
1. Teachers spend 4 - 6 weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.
2. Students experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months.
3. Reading as a leisure activity is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary and reading speed.
4. Reading just 4 - 5 books during the summer can prevent a decline in a child's fall reading scores.
5. The Summer Slide has cumulative effects of greater loss each summer.

In efforts to avoid the Summer Slide, I wanted to give our Summer Review Packets an update… and boy did they get an update!  They have been COMPLETELY revised!  The summer Review NO PREP Packets are packed with FUN, engaging and hands-on activities to help kids avoid the Summer Slide!
The BEST part…
NO PREP, NO laminating, no costly colored ink!  Just print and let kids learn this summer!

What is Phonemic Awareness and Why Teach it?

$
0
0
I get a lot of emails from parents who are ready to teach their child how to read. They tell me that their children know their letters and their sounds, therefore they are Ready to READ! "Where do we start and what do we do next?" they ask.

I LOVE their enthusiasm! I LOVE their willingness to dive right in.

However... diving into a full blown reading curriculum at that early stage is not the next step. To build a strong foundation for reading success, children need to master Phonological/Phonemic Awareness.

What is Phonological/Phonemic Awareness?

Phonological and Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds (phonemes).  This skill provides a strong foundation for early reading success. As students become more proficient in hearing, identifying and manipulating sounds, they can successfully move onto segmenting and blending words. A systematic and cohesive approach to teaching phonological awareness can build confident readers who are less likely to struggle with decoding and spelling skills. Students with strong a phonemic awareness are much more likely to be successful readers.

Who Can Benefit from Phonological/Phonemic Awareness?
Reading instruction is important for all students. A strong foundation in phonological/phonemic awareness can benefit:
*Beginning Readers
*Struggling Readers
*Students with autism or other developmental disabilities
*Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st Grade Students

Authentic Phonemic Awareness is done without printed words. It is all about the sounds that letters make. It gives students the ability to work with sounds, manipulate sounds and master these sounds in a variety of ways. When students are able to do these skills successfully, they are able to jump into phonics with a lot less struggle.  Phonics (not Phonemic Awareness) works with connecting the sounds to printed letters and words.  When you target phonemic awareness first, it allows a child to focus on one thing...sounds.  However, when you try to teach both phonemic awareness (sounds) and phonics (linking sounds to letters and words), it can be overwhelming and frustrating for children learning to read.

When a child struggles with reading, the gaps are often connected to a lack of phonemic awareness skills. Going back and reinforcing these skills can help fill in the gaps and build stronger readers.

Within my Phonemic Awareness Bundle, I have provided an opportunity to practice many skills necessary to give children a strong foundation with sounds. Let's take a look at this bundle, see how it works and why it is an important component to reading success.

The pictures and activities that I am about to show you below are all stored in my Phonemic Awareness Kit. This is EASY to set up and just requires a box and some file folders. This method keeps me organized and all of my materials are in one place. When my teaching materials are organized, I am more equipped to meet the needs of those that I am teaching.

In this post, I will show you 9 different activities to help build phonemic awareness.

Mastering Basic Facts Made EASY!

As teachers and parents, we understand the importance of mastering basic math facts.  Basic math facts provide a foundation for math success.  It is the precursor for more complex and challenging math procedures. Although we want kids to become fluent with their math facts, this is not a goal that is simple to achieve.

How do we help students master Basic Math Facts?

#1 Students need a variety of opportunities to learn and master math facts. Since students learn in different ways, we need to provide ample opportunity for mastery... in a variety of ways.

When it comes to working with math facts, I am all about making it fun and as hands-on as possible.  I have created 6 packets in our Addition and Subtraction Bundle to make practice FUN! I have also created our Addition and Subtraction Math Fact Booklets to give students endless opportunities to practice with 216 wipe on and wipe off booklets!

For students who need the extra support, it is my hope and goal that teachers and/or parents will use these resources with manipulatives. Below I will show you a few manipulatives that we like to use for adding and subtracting. For students who don't need the extra support, manipulatives may not be as necessary.  The most important thing is that you, as the teacher,  integrate manipulatives, visuals, tables, hundred charts and discussion as needed.
I like to use base ten blocks, jumbo dice, linking cubes and fun counters.
In the picture above, I have counting bears and insects. You could use ANYTHING...the important thing is to make it FUN and that you provide tangible items for students to manipulate.

Over time and through multiple avenues of practice, students will begin to master basic addition and subtraction facts automatically.  This is ultimate goal and this is what we hope to achieve for our students.

Providing HANDS-ON, FUN and ENGAGING opportunities for practice will help to maintain student interest.  These 6 packets hit the target and provide opportunities for differentiation to help scaffold the learning process.

In this post, I also want to show you how you can use many of these pages to make a reusable (wipe on and wipe off) binder that
helps save on paper and ink
and is EASY to set up!
This is especially useful for teachers who have a limited paper and ink supply and/or want to differentiate instruction for their students.

In addition to the printable pages above, we also have the Addition and Subtraction Math Booklets. These Wipe on and Wipe off booklets allow for endless opportunities of practice.  The BEST PART about these booklets, is that they are SELF CHECKING!

In this post I will show you a variety of FUN, ENGAGING and EFFECTIVE ways to help kids MASTER basic math facts!
