Pretend and Play Calculator Cash Register Review

Learning Resources is celebrating 30 years of growing imaginations!  In honor of the celebration, The Moffatt Girls received the Pretend and Play Calculator Cash Register!  (Limited Edition) What a FUN resource!

I always appreciate resources that can be used for different ages and this is definitely one of them!  I begin by letting Sophia, my 4 year old,  play with the cash register. She LOVES playing and pretending, so this was an immediate success.

I started by having her sort the bills and coins.  It was great for coin and bill identification.

Then I had Audrey, my 7 year old, make a sign for School Supplies and write the cost of each item.
Then I gave her some money to go shopping. If you notice, some of her prices are a bit expensive :)
Glue…$1.45
Scissors….$0.50
Crayons…$0.75
Dot Markers… $2.00 (EACH!)

Then she started shopping...

For example, she wanted to buy 2 pairs of scissors for $1.45 each.  She didn't have the exact change, so it was a great opportunity for me to show her how to make change.

The lady at the cash register was very helpful and managed to give us the correct change...

I absolutely LOVE this approach to learning money!  LOVE it!

Audrey was having difficulty figuring out how much change she should get if she gave Sophia a $5 bill.  I suggested that she ask Sophia for five $1 bills in exchange for her $5 bill.  Sophia had to count out five $1 bills which was the perfect type of math for her.  I couldn't have prepared a better lesson for the girls!

I also had Sophia work on coin identification by asking her for 2 quarters or 3 dimes.  She hasn't mastered her money yet, but we are excited to work on it!

All in all, this is a WONDERFUL learning tool!  Thank you Learning Resources!

If you are interested in this product or any of there resources, be sure to use the 20% coupon code they offer!

Such a great way to keep the FUN in learning!

Building Fluency - The Quick and Easy Way!

$

As we all know, fluency is a key component to reading success! Students need a LOT of opportunities to practice sight word recognition and newly learned decoding skills.  I wanted to create a packet that would help build fluency and allow for assessment.  Our new Fluency Strips (Set I) is a quick and easy way to practice, build fluency and assess students!

There are 480 different simple sentence strips in this packet!
This packet offers a TON of practice to help build fluency and confidence!

Question #1
What is a simple sentence?
The simple sentences in this packet are made of basic sight words and decodable CVC words.   This provides kids with a genuine opportunity to practice reading sentences they can decode with early phonics and basic sight words.

Question #2
How do the sentence strips work?
There are 480 different sentence strips in this packet.  The sentence strips are divided into 10 groups. I printed each set on colored cardstock and laminated them for durability.  Each set of sentence strips are labeled to provide for easy assessment and/or differentiation.

Printed each set on a different colored cardstock...

Laminated them…
I have a personal laminator, but when it comes to larger jobs I always take them to the teachers supply store.  This ends up being more cost effective and it saves me a bunch of time!

Hole punch them, cut them out and placed them on a ring…
Quick tip: Hole punch them BEFORE you cut them out!  It makes it a whole lot faster!  Sadly I realized this towards the end.

The rings are great because they are all in one place and will not get lost.

It is also helpful for kids to know which "color" fluency packet they are working on.

I am SUPER excited about these Fluency Strips!  With 480 DIFFERENT simple sentences, this will provide us with a LOT of fluency practice!!  The best part is that they are READY to GO!

Question #3
How does the assessment piece work?
Each set of sentence strips corresponds to 4 assessment sheets and there are 48 fluency strips per set.  For example, set 1 has 48 simple sentences, set 2 has 48 different simple sentences and so on.  The assessment sheets break the fluency strips into 4 smaller sets for quick practice and easy assessment.  This also helps the child feel less overwhelmed :)

The cute cover strips are included in the packet and they are the ONLY thing you need to print in color :)

I LOVE the look of our new fluency strips!  They are like eye candy :)

This makes it easy for kids to know which set they are working on and also makes it easy to differentiate...

Take set 4 for example...

Set 4 has 4 corresponding assessment sheets.  There are 12 sentences for each assessment sheet. This really helps break it down, especially in the beginning of the process. Kids can feel overwhelmed with too many sentences and teachers may not want to sit through LONG assessments.   However, as time goes on, they will be able to read an entire set quickly and with ease!
Quick and EASY assessments!

Each Fluency Strip  has a number.  In this case, this is from set 4 sentences 37...

As the child reads the sentence, it is easy to follow along with the assessment sheet...

I like to make notes along the way.  You can use this assessment sheet any way that best fits YOUR needs.  I like to check off the sentences that are read correctly, circle sentences that a child is unable to read and write the word that the child said in place of the actual word.
In this case, you can see that my daughter read "pig" for pet.  This tells me that she is recognizing the beginning sound, but it looks like we may need to work more on middle and ending sounds.  She is guessing at the last two sounds because she is not taking the time to sound it out...VERY typical for beginning readers.  There are also a few sight words that we need to work on.

As I mentioned, you can use the assessment sheets in any way that best fits your needs.  As the student reads the fluency strips, you can follow along with the assessment pages and make anecdotal notes to help identify areas of difficulty and/or strengths.  By identifying areas of difficulty, it is easier to target a child's need for specific instruction.  Or…you can do away with assessments altogether :)

Data Tracking
There are both individual and class check off sheets for each set.  This allows a child to work at his/her pace and allows the teacher/parent to keep records of of the sets that have been read fluently.  I plan on using these Fluency Strips with the littlest Moffatt Girl since she just started reading. She needs a LOT of extra practice and support and this is just PERFECT!

I will be using this Check off List so we can both monitor her progress.  She feels SO proud when she can finish a set! Of course we have a prize in place when she finishes reading all of her fluency strips!  I know that she will not be completely "fluent" after reading these the first time, so this will be something we will use again and again throughout the year.

It doesn't really matter what set they start with since they all use basic (pre-primer) sight words and simple CVC words.  Therefore, I let her pick the color she wanted to start on and of course it was pink :)

In this simple sentence fluency strip you can see there there are
two sight words: the and here
three CVC words: big, bug, dug

Then of course we had to try the pink set...

"Help" is one of the sight words, but it is also a decodable word so she tried sounding it out...

I am SO happy I made this packet!  This is EASY for me and a QUICK way to practice fluency!

I hope this makes practicing FLUENCY quick and easy!

Singapore Math GIVEAWAY!

I am SUPER excited to host a GIVEAWAY for Singapore Math Inc. This will be our 2nd year using Singapore Math Inc., and we LOVE it!

Did you know that kids in Singapore boast the highest math scores?  The Trends in Mathematic and Science Study (TIMSS) show Singpore as the top ranking in mathematical education!  The math teaching strategies in Singapore are obviously working. As a former teacher and now a homeschool mom, this is something that peaks my interest!

Picking the right math curriculum for The Moffatt Girls was something that took a lot of research and thoughtful consideration. Singapore Math is both challenging and rigorous, which is a perfect fit for my 2nd Grader.

Key Points about Singapore Math:
*The program really stresses mental math and the model drawing approach with a variety of strategies to help with these concepts. This is a curriculum that really focuses on conceptual understanding and scaffolds a child's learning through three-stages approach.  First, there is a concrete stage, which utilizes manipulatives, followed by a pictorial stage, and then an abstract approach.  This teaching method allows a child to have a solid understanding of basic mathematical concepts before working at the abstract level.

*The Primary Mathematics series encourages active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving.  I love how there is a strong emphasis on number sense, mental math skills and a deep understanding of place value.  Concepts are taught to mastery and then revisited.

The Curriculum:
Primary Mathematics has Levels 1-6 and each level has 2 textbooks (A and B).  In addition, there are 2 workbooks (A and B) and a Home Instructor's Guide or a Teacher's Guide. As a homeschool family, we are using the Home Instructor's Guide.   There are three different versions of this curriculum available, but after speaking to a representative, I felt that the U.S. Edition was right for us.  You can see samples of each edition {HERE}.  Singapore Math, Inc. also offers placement tests on their site, which you can download {HERE}.

Read more about it!
PBS Parents wrote a fantastic article on "What is Singapore Math?" They explain how Singapore Math Inc. is about mastery and NOT just memorization.  It is not just about learning the HOW, but also the WHY.

CNN also wrote a great article on how America's students can benefit from Singapore Math, and I couldn't agree more.  You can read that article {HERE}.

GIVEAWAY TIME!
Singapore Math Inc. has graciously offered a giveaway to one our readers for the grade level set of YOUR choice!
Can't wait to win?  You can check out Singapore's Math Curriculum {HERE}.

The giveaway set will include the following:
*Textbooks A and B
*Workbooks A and B
*Teacher's Guide OR Homeschool Guide
*Extra Practice OR Challenge Word Problems

Back to School in Action!

We started back to school this week and it has been such a FUN and exciting week!  The Moffatt Girls are enjoying school and the much needed routine that comes with every day school.  I have been using our NO PREP packets with both of the girls and it has really saved me a lot of time in prepping.

For the littlest Moffatt Girl who just entered Kindergarten, here some of our Back to School Math and Literacy (Kindergarten) NO PREP packet "In Action"…

Dot…Dot NOT a LOT!
We practiced squeezing those glue dots one by one!  Squeezing the glue bottle was great for building fine motor skills, the dots helped with one to one correspondence and of course we worked on controlling the glue dots :)

She was in the zone and really wanted to do a great job!

This page is actually a color by letter page, but we changed it up a bit and did a paint by letter page. When I pulled out the paints, you would have thought I gave her an art project!  This page was perfect for color word recognition/practice and upper and lowercase letter identification.

She was super proud of these pages :)

More Color by Letter pages!
This time we used the watercolor pencils!  Just dip the tip in water and color!

Roll and Trace the Number!
This was a really FUN and interactive page!  You began by rolling the die and then tracing the number in the column.  The first line helped with the line strokes, the second two lines are without the arrows and the last two lines allow for independent practice.

I let her use the colored markers to make it a bit more exciting.  As you can see (with the number 6), we definitely need more practice!  You could also place these pages in shed protectors and use again and again with a dry erase marker.

We pulled out the dot markers and die to roll and dot some beginning sounds!
FUN… FUN…. FUN!!

Incorporating a little bit of math with counting the numbers on the die and some beginning sounds.

I Can Count, Color and Write!
She counted the items, colored (or in this case, used the dot markers), and wrote the number on the line.

Here is our page all finished!  Again…as you can see, we will be working on proper number and letter formation.  LOVE it!

 I Know My Phone Number
I placed this page in a sheet protector because I knew it was an area that would need a lot of practice.  In this printable, I incorporated both the "regular" telephone and the cell phone.  This gives kids practice "pressing" their phone number on the phones.

Ten Frame Match Up!
Oh she love this page!  Ten Frame Match up was great for counting the dots on the ten frame and then matching them up to the number.  This was a cut and paste page, which is also great for building those fine motor skills.

More ten frame counting...

Ten frame glueing...

Roll and Color!
This one made her think a bit and really was the perfect challenge.  You begin by rolling a die. You color one of the items that matches your roll.  As you can see in the picture, she rolled a 3. She had to find and color a picture with 3 tally marks, 3 on the ten frame or a stick kid holding the number 3.

We are still working on our Ready2Read units. Here we are decorating our sight words with cheerios. I am pretty sure she ate more than she used ;)
We have taken the Ready2Read units a LOT slower than the week by week lesson plans.  At the same time, her confidence has grown tremendously and she is reading up a storm!  She is able to read and sound out all CVC word families before we even get to them.  These units really give kids the confidence they need to be a strong reader!

Oh boy…let me tell you about this picture!
This little honey has EXPLODED when has come to reading! The light bulb has clicked and she can't stop reading!  I created some Fluency Strips for her to work on and finished Set 1 in ONE DAY!  I thinking that it would take her a few days to finish the set, but obviously I was wrong.  Needless to say, she was pretty proud of herself!  She wanted to do Set 2 at the end of the day.  "PLEASE….PLEASE….I want to read the orange set!"

Well…. like a good mommy (wink, wink) I said,
"Okay, you can read set 2." :)
MELT.MY.HEART

I can hardly believe that this sweet little girl is in 2nd Grade!  Time goes by so fast, but we are enjoying every minute of it!

We used a lot of our September 2nd Grade NO PREP packet to teach, reteach and reinforce some 2nd Grade concepts.  In this case, she loved rolling the die to practice building place value!

Roll the Place Value
Roll 2 dice, put them in any order, make the number by drawing the base ten rods and units.  Finally, write the number in expanded form.

This is a great review that will lead us into the hundreds place value sheets.

On this Apple Pickin' page, she compared numbers with <, > and = signs.  The dot markers were used to identify odd and even numbers.  Although she fully understands this concept, it took some time for her to get the answers.  Since we are working for mastery, this was a great reinforcement page.

Grandma's Place Value Quilt was SO much fun!

School is in full force at Moffatt Elementary!
I hope you are enjoying your back to school start as well!

I am super excited about today's giveaway!  The Moffatt Girls LOVE to make learning fun and this Vowel Owl set fits the bill!  When I saw this adorable Vowel Owl set from Learning Resources, I knew would be a perfect learning tool for my little Sophia who is now in Kindergarten!  The timing for this product couldn't be more perfect!

As you can see, we had a ton of FUN with our Vowel Owls!

There are 6 colorful owls (5 printed with the vowels and 1 blank one). We used the yellow blank owl to store the 100 picture cards.   You could also use the blank one for long vowels or the "sometimes y vowel".  I love that this set is so bright, colorful and durable!

Simple pull out a picture card, say the same on the card and listen for the long/short single syllable vowel sound.

Once you hear the vowel sound, sort it into the correct owl cup.

She loved this activity! So simple and yet so effective! She played until all of her cards were gone, and then she wanted to play again!

For example, here is the picture cat.  Sophia would say the sounds of the word cat and listen for the vowel /c/.../a/.../t/ Then she would sort it in the red owl cup with the a on it. Some words word short vowels and some words were long vowels.

I am not sure why, but we sure giggled a lot during this game!  I think it was those cute owls!

Happy little learner = Happy Mommy!

I would also ask her if she heard a long vowel or a short vowel.  We talked about long and short vowels for awhile and then it really hit home!

For every single picture, she said the word and sounded it out…sound by sound!

This activity really helps with the following:
*word recognition
*sounding out words
*spelling the words
*syllables
*long/short vowels

Building Fluency with Blends, Digraphs and Sight Words!

I am SUPER excited to have finished Set 2 of our Fluency Strips!  A few weeks ago I post about our Set 1 Fluency Strips {HERE}.  We use the fluency strips every single day!  I can't even begin to tell you the impact these have had on the littlest Moffatt Girls confidence AND fluency! She is reading up a storm and is currently working on the 3rd sentence strip in Set 1!

Set 2 is a bit more challenging and will work with blends, digraphs and primer sight words.  There are 480 different simple sentences strips in this packet!  Each and every sentence will incorporate a blend and/or a digraph word.  It will also include primer sight words!  This gives kids the opportunity to work on sight words AND phonics skills!  This packet allows for a TON of practice building fluency and confidence!

Set #1 (1-10) works with only CVC words and pre-primer sight words.  Be sure to check out set 1 {HERE}
Set #2 (11-20) will work with blends, digraphs and pre-primer sight words.

As you can see, each set has been printed on colored cardstock, laminated and cut out.

I had a few questions as to what colored cardstock I used in set 1.  I purchased my cardstock at Staples and here is a picture of the paper I used. The cardstock on the far left is double-colored so I used 8 pieces for 1 set of fluency strips and the other 8 pieces for the another set.  It worked out perfectly!

I found it easier to print on colored cardstock, laminate, cut around the edges of the paper, hole punch and THEN cut out the fluency strips.

I used a larger ring this time and it made it easier to flip.

There are a total of 10 sets in Set #2.  Each individual sentence strip set has 48 sentences for a total of 480 simple sentences with blends, digraphs and primer sight words!

Here is an example of some of the sentences used in Set 2:

1. The duck came to her.
Sight words: the, came, to, her
Digraph: ck in duck

2. Did she grin at him?
Sight words: did, she, at, him
Consonant Blend: gr in grin

3. Did you see the small plant?
Sight Words: did, you, see, the
Consonant Blend: pl in plant

4. The frog is small.
Sight Words: the, is, small
Consonant Blend: fr in frog.

When a student is reading the Fluency Strips, it is easy to target areas of difficult in terms of sight words, blends and/or digraphs.

They are like eye-candy and so appealing!  I LOVE it when kids get excited about reading!

I hung the Fluency Strips on Commnad Hooks and they worked out great!
On the top row is Fluency Strips Set 1 (CVC word and pre-primer sight words)
The bottom row is Fluency Strips Set 2 (Blends, digraphs and primer sight words)
Set 3….Coming Soon!

I love how accessible and organized these fluency strips are!  I am currently using set 1 with Sophia who is in Kindergarten.  Audrey, who is in 2nd Grade, can read Set 2 with no problem.  However, we will be using them for dictation!  I will read 3-5 sentences each day and she will write them down.  This will allow her to practice her blends, digraphs and spelling of sight words.  It also reinforces proper sentence structure!  As the year progresses, Sophia will be using set 2 for fluency.

Be sure to check out the blog post for Set #1 to see the assessment piece in action!

You can purchase set #1 {HERE)

Set #2 available {HERE}

I hope you and your students find this resource helpful in building confidence AND fluency!

I LOVE being able to giveaway products that making learning FUN and exciting for kids! As you probably know, The Moffatt Girls LOVE Educational Insights because they make learning exciting and fun for kids!

I am thrilled to be able to giveaway one of Educational Insights award winning products, the GeoSafari Jr. My First Microscope!  This simple microscope turned into some WONDERFUL science lessons and discovers for the littlest Moffatt Girl!  In fact, at the end of the day she told me that she wanted to be a scientist when she grows up.  Although this changes from day to day, it sure made me happy to see her love science, learning and discovering new things!

As soon as we pulled this microscope out of the box, she went nuts!
We gathered some plant life from the backyard and started our discoveries.

This simple microscope was pretty powerful with a magnification at 8x with real working parts!
I especially like the light at the front of the microscope.

This simple microscope was far better than any curriculum I could purchase or lesson plans I could prepare!  The authentic and hands-on approach to science was priceless!  She was so excited about what she discovered when looking through the microscope. This made learning a pure JOY!

"Oh Mommy! I see hairs, black dots and a line!"

Then the BEST thing happened…
She wanted to start a "Science Journal"!  This was not my idea, but hers!   My teacher heart jumped with joy as I watched her get excited about science, about learning, about discovering!
This is learning at its BEST!

You probably can't see what is written in this journal…but it is precious!
She drew a picture of the flower and the wanted to label it.  She drew and labeled the tiny hairs that she saw on the flower through her microscope.  She also "claimed" to have seen sparkles on the flower.
The most important thing is that she was excited about science and she was excited to discover new things!

We also used simple sentence in the journal.  After closely examining a leaf, she wrote…
I see a leaf.
I see a line.
Then she labeled her drawing.
It was reading, science and a love for learning all wrapped up in the moment!

We went on to learn about a lot of other plant life in the backyard.  After that, we put cheerios, berries and other foods under the microscope. What a FUN and effective way to encourage scientific exploration in little kids!

Educational Insights is giving one of The Moffatt Girls readers a chance to WIN a GeoSafari Jr. My First Microscope! Just use the rafflecopter below:

We got a head start on our November packet this week because we are headed to the Grand Canyon!
Here are a few printables in action…

Roll a dice and trace a shape! So fun!!

This little Moffatt Girl was excited to see which shape would reach it to the top first!
Learning is at its BEST when it becomes a GAME!

As you can see, we probably need some practice with our circle, which look a bit like ovals ;)

 SPINNERS!
Make a paperclip spinner and spin a number.
Color the ten frame by the color code that matches the turkey!

I was wondering if she was ready for a spinner…
YES…she was!!!  She wanted to "play" this game again and again!
This was perfect for practice with quickly recognizing ten frames.
If the number was greater than five, she had to count and find the correct ten frame.
SO EFFECTIVE for her!

Roll a die and color the turkey!
I LOVE this because it helps kids to see a number on a die and automatically recognize it.
Perfect number sense "game" and coloring practice for fine motor skills!

Turkeys Count to TEN!
I found a use for all those little stickers I have!  We used them on our Ten Frame page and it was a HUGE hit! This made this simple printable HIGHLY effective, more engaging and helped master this concept!

Roll a die and count a ten frame!
Again, I love that this game can help with automatically "seeing" the number on the ten frame.  Obviously she had to count numbers beyond 5, but she us getting better and better at this!

Learning becomes a GAME!

I pulled out our markers (washable of course) and let her use those to write the number.
I find that using a variety of materials really helps maintain high interest!

What Comes Next?
Working with the cut and paste number turkeys was fun!

Since the second line didn't go in number order from the first, this activity really made her stop and thing about counting on from any given number.

So focused…so engaged!

Count and Graph PUMPKINS!
We used dot markers instead of crayons and it made it SO much fun!!

For our Color by Sight Word Page, we used paints!
I am pretty sure she thought we were doing an art project!
She worked on sight word recognition and building a simple sentence with this page.

Using the watercolor paints made her really focus on doing her BEST work!  She wanted to paint it perfectly so she paid careful attention to each sight word!

Cutting out the words, unscrambling and building a sentence!

Turkey Addition to 5!
We used those cute little turkeys at the top to help add!

I wanted to make it even more concrete and hands-on, so I used some bug math manipulatives!

Another Color by Sight Word page with watercolor pencils!

I am not sure if she would have done as nice of a job if we just used crayons!
LOVE it!!
 Building the sentence...

 Writing the sentence…

This was a simple introduction for counting by 5's and tracing the numbers...

We used our markers with this FUN page!
Roll a die, trace a repetitive sentence with sight word and a CVC word that you rolled!

As you can see, she rolled a 2 in the first sentence and traced:
Look for the _____.  She filled in the blank with hen.
For the second sentence, she rolled a 4 and will write:
Look for the bed.

She was pretty proud of herself!

Learning and mastering ten frames is high on our list things to work on this year!  I am super excited about  Learning Resources®10 on the Spot!™ Ten-Frame Game ! Kids love games and this ten frame learning tool is VERY effective!

How the game works:
This adorable ladybug ten frame game plays just like BINGO, but instead of matching you are trying to make 10!  Each player picks a ladybug spot, turns it over and covers the numbered pieces that together make 10.  Each ladybug has two sides, ten frame pictures for beginners on one side, and the numbers for more advanced players on the other side.

What is included:
There are 72 spots (game pieces) and six double-sided, very durable cards.

Here is the game "in action":

Each player gets a ladybug. The side shown below is for beginners and has the picture ten frame.
This is perfect for Kindergarten...

When it is your turn, flip over a ladybug spot and see if you have a ten frame that adds up to 10...

This was the PERFECT challenge for Sophia (my Kindergartener)!
I LOVE that Audrey (her older sister) is so eager to help!
Audrey (on the right) is using the side with numbers instead of pictures.
This is perfect for more advanced players.

Audrey is showing Sophia how to play.  Here is a has a ladybug spot with 5 in the ten frame.  She needs to turn over a spot with 5 more in the ten frame to make 10!

Here is another example…
If you turn over an 8 ten frame, you need to find the ten frame that adds up to 10, which is 2.
You add the spot to the ladybug.  Whoever covers all there spots first, WINS!

Turn over a spot...

Find the match that makes 10...

Learning becomes a GAME!!
priceless...

A happy little learner = a happy mommy!

Guess who one this game?!?!

Such a FABULOUS and effective game!

Ready2Read posts are my FAVORITE to do!  I cannot even begin to tell you how much I LOVE seeing my little girl become a strong and confident reader!  Ready2Read gives so much joy and excitement in the reading process.  It is a journey that we both LOVE!

This post will show you some of the activities in action for Unit 5.
Unit 5 Sight Words: it, one, find, little, yellow
Word Families: -ap and -ad
*Daily detailed Lesson Plans included
***SAVE 20% on the BUNDLE : HERE
The goal for Ready2Read is to make learning FUN, hands-on and super effective!  The activities in these packets are designed to reach all types of learners. Mastery of sounds, word families and sight words are key components to a confident and happy learner.

Decorating SIGHT WORDS!
This simple activity is a FAVORITE and super effective!  Learning sight words with such a hands-on approach makes it FUN!  It doesn't hurt that she gets to eat, too ;)

I also love that this activity allows for building fine motor skills!
Squeezing those glue bottles can be a lot of work, but it helps build up those muscles for writing!

SO FUN!!

Since kids LOVE to sing, we sing our sight words to the tune of BINGO each week.  This little Moffatt Girl knows how to do this activity by herself and just LOVES it!  This very simple activity allows students to SEE the word, HEAR the word when sining and SPELL the word!

Word Family Word Sort
This is our -ad and -ap family train!

She has to read the words and sort them to the correct train…

Sounding it out letter by letter and then blending the word...

It is always fun to see which train will be the longest…

These 3 letter CVC puzzles are SO fun!  I placed some magnets on the back of the strips and she puts them together on the whiteboard.  This is an activity that we do several times.

THIS is the smile and joy I am always looking for!

She likes to put the picture together first, and then sound out the word...

More Sight Word decorating...
\
Let's just say that she REALLY likes using the sprinkles ;)

Stamp it Up pages!
Using letter stamps are very effective in helping spell sight words.  You can use any type of stamps, but I like these Follow the Dots Stamps from Lakeshore.
They allow you to stamp and then trace the letters. It allows that extra step in learning and mastering a sight word...

Oh…so fun!!

I love that she is so focused during this activity.  She hunts for the letters, stamps it and then traces the word.  She feels so accomplished at the end of the activity!

I like to incorporate as many hands-on activities as I can because it really helps in maintaining interest.  Whenever we pull out the Dot Markers…it is all about FUN!
This Find and Color (Dot) page requires the student to pick a word from the pile, read it and dot (or color) it on the page.

I LOVE this!! You can see her sounding out the word, looking for the word on the page and so eager to dot it!  Learning doesn't get better than this!

We are big coloring fans and this Color by Sight Word page is always a hit!

So focused...

Here is the See, Trace and Write page.
This time we used rainbow colors to trace, and write each word...

She tries so hard to make her letters just perfect. I carefully watch her during this process since we are really trying to work on proper letter formation.  She does such a great job, especially since the SEE it part shows her the proper formation, the TRACE it part provides a little less guidance an the WRITE it part allows for independent practice.

Working hard!

Building CVC Words with the -ap and -ad families...

Looking at the picture, sounding out the word and finding letter tiles to make the word...

Success!  I love seeing her confidence grow with each different activity!

Yep!  She is a HAPPY little learner!

You can also see other Ready2Read units in action:

*We also have the BUNDLE (all 8 units), which is discounted 20% HERE
At this stage in our Ready2Read program, our FAVORITE additional resource is our Fluency Strips (Set 1)

The goal of Ready2Read is not to master a word family by sight, but rather to work on blending sounds together.  Therefore, even though we haven't covered many of the word families found in the Fluency Strips, Sophia is able to read them by sound them out.  Her confidence and fluency is growing SO quickly!  It is exciting to watch her READ!

Happy Learning!

I LOVE "toys" that make kids think! Learning Resources has done it again with their Top Ten Gears! Gears! Gears! Build and Bloom Building Set!  This is not just a toy, but a learning tool that allows kids to problem!  This little Moffatt Girl LOVES to build things, so this was just perfect for her!

What is included in this set?
116 colorful gears (gears, flowers, butterflies, bees, ladybugs, wiggly stems and more!)

Both girls were pretty excited about this new "toy"!  They worked together to build and make a working flower garden.

Even Audrey, my 2nd grader, enjoyed this set!

Sophia (the 5 year old) could not stop playing with her new Gears set!

It was all about problem solving and figuring out how things work.  Putting things together and taking them apart.  Playing and learning all at the same time!

This photo makes me SUPER happy!  Sophia took out the picture directions and got busy constructing what she saw in the pictures.  This type of learning toy in invaluable!  So much fabulous learning takes place when kids get to "play" like this!

I also appreciate how easy the pieces snap together.
This makes it fun for little hands to construct things without feeling frustrated.

She's thinking.  How does this work?  How do the pieces work together?
LOVE it!!

Sophia worked SO hard on building her garden and she was so proud to see how it all worked together!

When you turn the little hand crank, the gears work together to make all of the pieces move. A spinning flower garden!  However, if the pieces are not connected, everything won't work together.  This gives kids the perfect opportunity to problem solve and figure it out.

Learning Resources has graciously offered to give a set away to one of the Moffatt Girl readers!  For a chance to WIN this Gears! Gears! Gears! set, use the Rafflecopter below!

Here are a few printables in action…

Our Color by Word Family pages are always a HUGE hit!

We LOVE these watercolor pencils!  Just dip the tip of the pencil in water and it turns into a non-messy watercolor! LOVE….LOVE….LOVE these!

This little Moffatt Girls is always happy when I pull them out!  I like breaking things up and making them as engaging as possible. Sometimes we paint, sometimes we use the watercolor pencils and sometimes we just use crayons.

It is kind of like an art project for her :)

What I LOVE about these fun coloring pages is that kids hardly realize that they are reading 21 word family word, 4 color words and following directions by coloring by the code!  So much learning for a "coloring page"!

Sound it out and READ pages...

This is a great way for kids to work on sounding out words and writing each sound in the sound boxes.  Next, they get to use that simple CVC word in context by adding it to a simple sentence and READING!

As you can see, we still need to work on some proper letter formation :)  However, the focus of this page was on sounding out short a words and putting them in a simple sentence!  SUCCESS!

Then of course coloring is a very important component...
This next page was very engaging and brought lots of giggles!  You have to match the correct CVC word to the correct picture in order to deliver you letter to Santa.  Great for reading CVC words!

This coin riddles pages was such a GREAT way to work on making exact change!

Here is an example of one of the riddles:
Beth had 5 coins. The amount of the coins is 38 cents. What coins does Beth have?

I found it to be most effective when we worked with real coins.  Of course you could always use play money, especially in a classroom setting.  Some of the printables are great for independent work, and some are great for teaching.  This was a page that we worked through together!  The perfect challenge!

 Measurement: Inches and Centimeter
We pulled out the measuring tape (from the sewing box) and got to work!

It was so fun because we got to measure the snowmen Puddles, Shorty, Buttons and Frosty!

We measured the height...
and we measured the width for a bonus :)

Subtraction with Regrouping
I always like to incorporate a couple of skills on each page.  In this page, we did subtraction with regrouping.  Then, you had to color the lights green or red, depending on if they were odd or even.

Working on Dictionary Skills….

*Find the word in the dictionary (working on ABC order)
*Write the page number
*Write the guide words on that page
*Write the definition
*Use it in a sentence

Making New Words...
This is such a great way for kids to work on making words!  We cut out the letter tiles at the bottom of the page, and used them to make as many words as we could.

This is such a great way for kids to see word patterns, blends and digraphs.

Hard at work with words!

I hope that these NO PREP packets are super helpful to you during the busy month of December and that they make learning FUN, engaging and hands-on!

How to help BEGINNING or STRUGGLING writers succeed!

$

Writing in a skill that requires daily practice.  I have a little Moffatt Girl who is VERY eager to write.  I wanted to make some NO PREP Journal Prompts that would help her feel successful and learn to love the writing process.  I recently posted our NO PREP December Journal Prompts {HERE}.

Our new NO PREP Journal Prompts for Beginning (or struggling) Writers have been a HUGE hit!  I am overjoyed at the response I got the other day when we did our first writing prompt.  I feel like a little writer has been born! I now have a little girl who is BEYOND EXCITED to write every day!

These journal prompts are designed to help beginning and/or struggling writers build confidence, practice articulating thoughts, work on fine motor skills and proper letter formation.

Here is how they work…
Each journal prompt has "I Can" statements with text and visuals to help remind students to:
*use capital letters
*use finder spacing
*sound out words
*use periods
*draw a picture to support the text

There is also a place for students to illustrate their work or label pictures.
Each journal prompts has 2 different versions for differentiation:
-one with a starter phrase
-one without the starter phrase for more advanced writers

At the bottom of each journal prompt is an illustrated word bank! The word bank helps support and generate ideas for beginning and/or struggling writers.  It is important to remind students that they are not limited to the ideas/words in the word bank.

Each month will also include a fun cover to help create ownership and excitement about the journal prompts for the month.  Something that I like to do is to create a spiral bound notebook with all the journal prompts ready to go.  I usually get that done at a local office supply store.

I also included a basic SIGHT WORD list to help spell some of the most common words that kids use.

Here is a sample of one of the journal prompts included in this months set:
I am SO, SO excited about our NEW Journal Prompts because this little Moffatt Girl LOVED them!  After we finished our first prompt she said, "I love school, Mommy!"
Well…if that just doesn't MELT.MY. HEART!

We started by coloring the cover page.   Kids love to color and this was a perfect way to get them excited about the journal prompts!

Since Sophia is in Kindergarten, we use the set that has the starter sentences.  Next year for 1st grade, I will use the version without the sentence starters.  First we talked about the prompt, then she traced the starter phrase.  Actually, she wanted to draw a picture first, and then she started the prompt.

She used finger spaces…

She used capital letters and periods…

She sounded out words…

This process took about 20 minutes, so we took a small break until the next day.
She was eager to finish her prompt...

This little honey worked HARD!  She was so excited about her writing!  To help her with the process, we would stop and reread what she wrote every few words.  She was so excited to see just how much she had written when she was done! She was proud that SHE could read it ALL by HERSELF!

We used the "I Can" Statement on the right of each page to help remind her of what good writing looks like! We read the statement and she said, "I did that!  I used a capital right here! (pointing to her capitals)  I sounded out box and I used a period two times!"
SUCCESS…SUCCESS…SUCCESS!
Honestly, I didn't realize how powerful those "I Can..." statements would be!

Of course she wanted her picture to represent her writing, so she colored carefully and with great detail!
She created ownership of her writing!  This was something that she was VERY proud of!

 More details!
 Yep!
I think she is pretty proud of herself!
I am proud of her, too!

Her prompt says:
When I wrap a gift, I put it in a box.
Then I put a bow on the box.

Here is one more finished piece!
She even sounded out Christmas….all by herself!!
This is HUGE and we are on our way to some great writing!

Get Organized - School Papers

Do piles of paperwork drive you CRAZY?  Me, too!   I especially dislike piles of paperwork that just sit there, begging me to put them away…somewhere…anywhere!  I like to think of myself as organized, but in reality it's a struggle!  It is especially hard for me to stay organized when I don't have a specific place for something.

Last school year I struggled with my girls schoolwork!  Where do I put?  Should I keep it or toss it?  Do I keep everything or just some things?   About the middle of the school year I realized that the piles of paperwork was causing me STRESS!  I decided that this was NOT working for me and so I made a change!

I need to set myself up for success and that is where my month by month files come into place.

I created a very simple file box that works for me.  It is ready to go at the BEGINNING of the school year so I don't have to think about it later!  Everything has a place and that place is ready to be used!

I started off by getting a file box and some hanging file folders.  You can get them anywhere, but I picked mine up at The Container Store.  I have a little obsession with The Container Store right now :)

I write each name and month on a file, so it's ready to go!

I only file the papers once a month.  I like to paperclip each subject together and add the stacks to the files.

It's ready to go and there are no more piles of paper just laying around!  I have to admit…I don't keep everything.  Some papers find their way in the "round" file :)

I also like the fact that at the end of the year I can close the box and put it away in storage.  Our paperwork is easily accessible and you can see the month by month progress! I only have a few things from childhood, but my girls will be able to physically see how much they learned!

I think you can adjust this method to fit your need and make life a bit easier!

I hope this helps!
Happy organizing!

Here is a few pages of the Kindergarten packet "in action"…

We used a bingo dabber to dot the numbers 1-75.
This was the PERFECT challenge for her!
 And super FUN!

I had her say each number before she dabbed it.
It was a great way to make sure she could read and recognize numbers up to 75.

"This is FUN!"
This page took her a bit of time to complete...

but boy was she proud of herself at the end of the maze!

Following Directions with Positional Words…
She had to read (or listen to) the directions and color the picture accordingly.

Label and Write!
These pages were a HUGE hit and really took some time to complete...

First, she began by labeling the picture using the word bank.  She was able to read dog, boy, sled and hat.  When we came to the word scarf we worked on sounding it out.

She took the labeling VERY serious!  I really like the sound boxes because it ensures that you are putting the correct letters into each box!

We even erased things when they were incorrect ;)

Then we wrote a sentence!
Here sentence was:
The boy is pulling the dog.
As you can see, we get a little fancy with our y's!

Color by Ten Frame!
Count the ten frames and use the color code to color the skates...

We actually started with the one that had 20 in it and worked backwards.  I explained that when 2 ten frames were fill, that was the same as 10+10.  We know that 10+10 = 20
The visual aspect of 2 ten frames that were filled made it easy for her to see 20.

Then we worked on finding (counting) 19.  We know that 19 is one less than 20.
EASY!

Non-Standard Measurement with a Snowman Ruler!
Begin by cutting out the snowman ruler...

 Measure the pencil...

 Measure your hand...

 Measure a glue stick...

Measure your shoe!  TOO MUCH FUN!!

She LOVED being able to measure the items, count the snowmen and record her answer!

 Measure the crayon!

Poetry: Writing a Haiku (Write and illustrate your own Haiku (example given.)

Here are a few of the 2nd grade pages "in action"…

We are working on long vowel spelling patterns.  This little Moffatt Girl LOVES to box up the words and then put them in the correct sentence!

Haiku Poems!
Oh…these were way too fun!  I think we will be doing these all January!

Audrey's Poem:
Penguins
Penguins like to swim
Sliding down the snowy hill
Come and slide with me!

I pulled out our clock to help work on elapsed time...

This was a GREAT way to practice time in 15, 20 and 30 minute increments...

These little fish need to eat at specific times.  She had to fill in the times for each fish and show the elapsed time according to the given increments...

MASTERY!

Phew!  All of the penguins are fed on time! :)

Roll and Color a Shape...
This was a fun and interactive way to work on recognizing different shapes!

She had to roll and color a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, or octagon!
This simple worksheet made this activity SO much fun for her!

Measurement in Inches…
We used the ruler to read the directions and measure different parts of the penguin!
She LOVED this!

I hope these packets make January learning FUN, hands-on, engaging and highly effective!
